Singapore detects case of new British strain of coronavirus

It has detected preliminary positives in eleven other cases from Europe

Singapore has detected this Wednesday remains of the new strain of the coronavirus detected in the United Kingdom in a sample of a student who returned from the country on the 6th after having been studying on the islands.

The Ministry of Health has declared that the 17-year-old girl was quarantining in a facility provided for this purpose upon her arrival, so the transmission was cut off and there is no evidence that this strain, which is believed to be more contagious, is circulating on a community basis, according to the local news network CNA.

Likewise, the Asian country has carried out analyzes in 29 of the 31 samples of the imported cases from Europe that arrived in December and has detected “preliminary positives” in another 11, while 12 have tested negative and 5 had little viral load to be analyzed.

In response to the discovery of the strain, Singapore had already closed its border with the United Kingdom and those who had visited the country in the last 14 days and were not citizens or permanent residents could not enter the country.

In addition, this second group now requires a PCR test at destination and a 14-day quarantine.

With 21 new cases detected this Wednesday, Singapore has registered 58,482 infections so far in the pandemic.
