A nurse becomes the first person to receive the coronavirus vaccine in the US

A New York City nurse became the first person to receive the coronavirus vaccine on Monday in the United States, the country most affected in total number of cases and deaths since the start of the pandemic.

Sandra Lindsay, who works at Long Island Jewish Medical Center in Queens, has said “she feels good” after the vaccination. “I want to thank all the frontline workers and all my colleagues … for doing their job during this pandemic around the world,” she said.

She has also expressed her wish that “this marks the beginning of the end of a very painful period,” as reported by the US television channel CNN. “I feel hope today, relief,” he stressed.

Lindsay has thus become the first person to receive the vaccine after approval given by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), an organization that has indicated that it must be inoculated to people over 16 years old.

US President Donald Trump has applauded the milestone through a message posted on his official account on the social network Twitter. “First vaccine administered. Congratulations, United States! Congratulations, world!” He said.

For her part, the governor of New York, Andrew Cuomo, has said that she believes that “this is the weapon that will end the war.” “We have airplanes, trains and automobiles moving throughout the state. We want (the vaccine) to be deployed, and to be deployed quickly,” he argued.

Likewise, the mayor of New York, Bill de Blasio, has stressed that “it is going to be a good day.” The shipments are part of an initial batch destined to vaccinate essential or at risk people, which includes health workers, according to the American newspaper ‘The New York Times’.

The US authorities have confirmed 16,258,573 cases of coronavirus to date, with 299,193 deaths and 6,298,082 recovered from COVID-19, according to data collected by Johns Hopkins University and published through its website.
