An earthquake of preliminary magnitude 6.6 has caused the collapse of several buildings on Friday in the Turkish city of Izmir, in the Aegean region (west of the country), as reported by the national agency for disaster management and the Ministry of the Inside.
The earthquake, registered at around 1:51 p.m. (Spanish peninsular time), has so far collapsed at least six buildings in the Bornova and Bayrakli districts, with no record of fatalities for now, according to the Interior Minister. Turkish, Suleyman Soylu, in a statement collected by the newspaper ‘Hurriyet’.
According to the Authority for the Management of Emergencies and Disasters (AFAD), the epicenter has been registered about 17 kilometers off the coast of Izmir, and at a depth of 16.5 kilometers.
The tremor has also been perceived in Istanbul, as well as in Greece, especially on the island of Crete, with no evidence of damage in these areas at the moment.
