Apple to start mass production of an iPhone 12 with 5G in mid-September, according to Nikkei

Apple will begin mass production of at least one of the four iPhone 12 models with 5G connectivity in mid-September, while production of the rest of the models will begin between the end of this month and the first weeks of October.

Production will begin with the lower-priced model that has a 6.1-inch OLED screen and two rear cameras, as reported by the Nikkei portal.

The other three models of the iPhone 12 will be a version with a 5.4-inch OLED screen, another with 6.1 inches and a triple camera system and LiDAR scanner and, finally, a 6.7-inch model and triple camera .

Apple ordered components for up to 80 million 5G iPhones, but according to sources cited by Nikkei, the actual amount produced this year will be between 73 and 74 million, with the rest being deferred until early 2021.

The company is also preparing a new accessory called Airtag, which will allow users to track non-Apple devices that are already in production.

Apple acknowledged in late July that the arrival of the iPhone 12 would be delayed for several weeks and would not go on sale in September, as has happened in previous years with previous models.

The company’s chief financial officer, Luca Maestri, confirmed that the main reason for the delay was due to the new coronavirus pandemic.
