Trump says the US could win the war in Afghanistan “in a week”

The president of the United States, Donald Trump, said Monday that the US Army could win the war in Afghanistan in a week, although that would mean a very high number of deaths.

“I could win that war in a week. I don’t want to kill ten million people,” he said, before adding that, if he wanted to resort to that option, “Afghanistan would be eliminated from the face of the earth.”

“I don’t want to follow that path. I have a plan that could win the war in a very short period of time,” he said, without giving further details.

Trump’s words have come before his meeting in the White House with Pakistan’s Prime Minister Imran Jan, with the agenda focused on the peace process in Afghanistan.

The Taliban have been talking with US diplomats for months to agree to the withdrawal of more than 20,000 troops from the international forces of Afghanistan in exchange for guarantees that the country will not be used as a base for terrorist attacks.

However, so far they have refused to negotiate directly with the Government of Ashraf Ghani, whom they consider a “puppet” of the West. In the absence of a ceasefire, the insurgents maintain their attacks and the security forces continue their operations. Europa Press
