The executive director of the Port Authority of Puerto Rico, Anthony Maceira, announced today that an aerial disaster drill will be held on Thursday at the Mercedita International Airport in Ponce (south), as part of its emergency plan, as required by the Federal Aviation Administration.
Maceira explained that the simulation exercise of the security measures and the contingency plans that are applied in case of an airport emergency, will be carried out between 11.00 in the morning and 02.00 in the afternoon, so he urged the Residents of the area not to be scared.
“For this purpose, they should not be alarmed if they hear sirens and observe emergency vehicles to or from that airport, operations at the facility and flight itineraries will not be affected,” Maceira said.
The Secretary of Public Affairs of the Government also explained that all certified airports, such as the Mercedita case, need to review their emergency plan every three years through a simulation.
This action allows to evaluate and improve the response capacity of the Air Rescue Unit, as well as that of the state and federal agencies called to respond in these facilities in case of air accidents. (EFEUSA) .-
