López Obrador asks Trump for dialogue and no confrontation over migration and tariff

Mexico, .- Mexican President, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, asked Thursday in a letter to Donald Trump deepen the dialogue to seek alternatives to the immigration problem and avoid confrontations, after the US president announced tariffs as punishment for the continuous flow of people.

“I propose to deepen the dialogue, to seek alternative alternatives to the immigration problem,” said Lopez Obrador in the letter to Trump, in which he reiterates that he does not want confrontation but does not lack value either, since, as he added, it is not ” coward or timorous. “

In the letter, released by the Mexican Presidency, López Obrador assured Trump that his country “fulfills its responsibility to prevent migration” without violating human rights.

Trump announced today through Twitter the gradual imposition of tariffs on all Mexican products, from 5% to 25%, and threatened to keep them “until such time as the illegal migrants who come through Mexico, to our country, stop. “
In the letter, the Mexican president assured Trump that social problems “are not resolved by taxes or coercive measures.”

In addition, he told Trump that he does not believe in the Law of Talon, in the “tooth for tooth” or the “eye for an eye”, because all “we would stay chimuelos (grimaces) or one-eyed”.

Likewise, he pointed out that men of State and Nation “are obliged to seek peaceful solutions to controversies and to put into practice forever, the beautiful ideal of non-violence.”

In that sense, López Obrador asked Trump, if he has no problem, to instruct his officials to attend the representatives of Mexico who will travel to Washington this Friday “to reach an agreement for the benefit of our nations.”

López Obrador reminded him that since the beginning of his government on December 1, he proposed opting for development cooperation and helping the Central American countries with productive investments to “resolve this painful issue in depth.”

He reminded Trump that in a short time Mexicans will no longer need to go to the United States and that their migration “will be optional and not forced” because his government fights corruption, the main problem in Mexico.

Mexico will become “a power with a social dimension” and Mexicans will be able to work and be happy where they were born, where their family members, their customs and their cultures are and not go to the United States, he said.

López Obrador reminded Trump that former Mexican President Benito Juarez had excellent relations with the hero Abraham Lincoln and that Franklin D. Roosevelt “understood the profound reasons” that led the ex-Lazaro Cárdenas to decide on oil expropriation (1938).

López Obrador sent Trump the question of how, overnight, the fraternity country with the migrants can become a ghetto, a closed space where the right is stigmatized, mistreated, persecuted, expelled and canceled. to justice.
