The UN condemns the murder of Mexican journalist Santiago Barroso

Mexico, .- The office in Mexico of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (UN-DH) condemned on Saturday the murder of journalist Santiago Barroso Alfaro, in San Luis Río Colorado, Sonora (northwest), occurred on Friday.

“This and other crimes against freedom of expression must be investigated and effectively clarified,” said Jan Jarab, representative of UN-DH in Mexico.

“Only in this way can you send a clear message of support to those who practice journalism,” he added.

Jarab said that the effective and thorough investigation of this crime “should include as one of its lines of research the possible link with Barroso’s journalistic activity.”

The representative recalled that attacks against journalists restrict in practice the right of the entire society to receive plural information.

For this reason, he considered it necessary, together with the investigation, “to implement adequate protection measures for Barroso’s family and colleagues and to adopt measures to prevent further attacks against freedom of expression in Sonora.”

The UN-DH office said that Barroso’s murder is the fourth serious attack against journalists and media in Sonora so far this year and is the fourth journalist killed in Mexico in 2019.

In 2018, the UN-DH reported the murder of at least 12 journalists and the disappearance of another in Mexico.

Barroso, 47, who was conducting a radio show and running a news site, was attacked at his home, where he received three bullet wounds.

During the mandate of the president of Mexico, the leftist Andrés Manuel López Obrador, who started on December 1, have been killed at least six journalists. (EFE)
