WASHINGTON (Reuters) – Former Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton said on Tuesday she would not run in the 2020 election, ruling out the possibility of a new confrontation with the current president, Republican Donald Trump.
“I’m not going to compete” in the 2020 elections, Clinton said in an interview with a New York state broadcaster, in which she cleared up doubts about a hypothetical candidacy of her that had been maintained in recent months.
Clinton remarked that, nevertheless, “he would continue working and defending” the issues in which he believes.
“We are not only polarized, we have really gotten into opposing camps in a way that I have not seen in my adult life,” he stressed in a clear reference to the Trump administration.
Therefore, Clinton insisted that “will continue talking” and will not go “anywhere”.
In this regard, the former secretary of state under President Barack Obama announced that she will play an active role in the next electoral cycle, where the Democratic primaries already have fourteen candidates for the presidential candidacy.
This weekend, Senator Bernie Sanders, who disputed the candidacy for Hillary Clinton in 2016, confirmed his intention to compete again.
The strong contest for the Democratic presidential candidacy of 2020 counts among the candidates with Senators Kamala Harris, Elizabeth Warren and Kirsten Gillibrand, as well as with the former Secretary of Housing Julián Castro, among others.
Clinton said he had met in recent weeks with some of the candidates to give their opinion about the new electoral battle.
Other Democratic figures on which his possible candidacy is speculated are former vice president Joseph Biden and popular former Texas state congressman Beto O’Rourke.
The eventual Democratic candidate will face Trump, who has already confirmed that he will seek re-election in next year’s elections and today he referred sarcastically to the decision of which he was his rival in 2016.
