The OAS meets on Thursday to discuss Venezuela at the request of 8 countries

The Permanent Council of the Organization of American States (OAS) will meet next Thursday to address the “recent events in Venezuela” at the request of eight countries, including the US, Colombia, Brazil and Argentina.

In a document, the Presidency of the Permanent Council, which occupies El Salvador, announced today that it agreed to the request of eight member states, so that at 11.00 a.m. EST. On Thursday, January 24, a meeting will begin to address “the recent events in Venezuela.”

The eight applicants are Argentina, Brazil, Canada, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Peru and the USA.

Those countries made that request today in a document signed by the ambassador to the OAS, Carlos Trujillo.

Venezuela is experiencing a situation of political uncertainty since the Venezuelan president, Nicolás Maduro, took office again on January 10.

Maduro, who has been in power since 2013, was re-elected for a period of six more years in the elections held last May, which were not recognized by most of the international community.

On the same day Maduro took office, 19 of the 34 countries that are active members of the OAS approved a resolution not to recognize the legitimacy of Maduro, although at the moment Paraguay is the only one that has decided to break diplomatic relations with Venezuela and close his embassy in that nation.

In addition, they issued statements of repudiation to Maduro the European Union (EU) and the Lima Group, which groups States of the American continent that consider democracy in Venezuela broken.

The president of the National Assembly (AN, parliament), Juan Guaidó, has received different support – including that of the OAS Secretary General, Luis Almagro – to act as the country’s interim leader, an option that includes the Venezuelan Constitution in the case that there is no legitimate president and a series of conditions are met.
