Spanish filmmaker Julio Medem prepares the television series “Jai alai”

The Spanish filmmaker Julio Medem, known for feature films such as “Vacas” (1992) or “Lucía y el sexo” (2001), is preparing a television series called “Jai alai”, the specialized media Variety reported today.

Medem and Mexican producer Eva Ruiz de Chávez devised the premise of “Jai alai”, a series that will revolve around this sport (basket tip) of Basque origin and its rise and decline in the United States.

The plot of “Jai alai” begins in the 70s, when the popularity of this sport grows in the United States and Miami becomes a cover for money laundering of drugs; and continues during the 80s and 90s, with the crisis and the decline of jai alai.

With “The Godfather” (1972) as a source of inspiration, according to its leaders, “Jai alai” will tell the story of Xalba, the father of a pelotaris dynasty who decides to give control of his criminal empire in Miami to his son Ategi. , who is considered to be the best pelotari in the world.

Co-production between Spain, Mexico and the United States, the first season of this project will feature ten episodes and is scheduled to begin filming in January 2019 in Miami (United States), Mexico and the Basque Country (Spain).

It is expected that the distribution of this television show includes, among other nationalities, Spanish, Cuban, Colombian, Mexican, Irish and Italian characters.

The last film to date by Julio Medem is “Ma ma” (2015), starring Penelope Cruz, while his next film to see the light will be “The Tree of Blood”, a thriller that will lead Ursula Corberó and Álvaro Cervantes .
