The Secretary of State, Rex Tillerson, announced today that the country is willing to explore with Russia the establishment of no-fly zones in Syria.
In addition to the no-fly zones, the United States also wants observers of the ceasefire on the ground and coordinate with Russia the delivery of humanitarian aid, according to a Tillerson statement.
All with the aim of advancing in the “stability” of Syria.
“If countries work together to create stability on the ground, it will lay the foundations for Syria’s political future,” the State Department said in a statement.
Tillerson also warned that Moscow is “responsible” for the future actions of the Bashar government of Asad, of which it is the main supporter, and urged all actors in the Syrian conflict to focus their efforts on fighting the Islamic State.
“We call on all parties, including the government and its allies, opposition forces and coalition forces to carry out the battle to defeat the EI, to avoid clashes between them,” he said.
Tillerson will accompany President Donald Trump on Friday and Saturday at the G20 leaders’ summit to be held in the German city of Hamburg.
Trump will meet Friday with Russian President Vladimir Putin in their first face-to-face meeting since the tycoon landed in January at the White House.
Next week, representatives from the 72 member countries of the US-led international coalition will meet in Washington. In front of the EI to accelerate its efforts against the jihadist group at a key moment for the battles in Mosul and Al Raqa in Syria.
