Republican Congressman Randy Fine has sparked controversy in the United States by comparing Muslims to dogs in a series of statements made on social media, prompting several high-ranking officials to call for his resignation.
The controversy arose after the Florida congressman—a conservative and known supporter of President Donald Trump’s MAGA movement—asserted that “choosing between Muslims and dogs wouldn’t be a difficult decision” if forced to choose.
“If we were forced to choose, it wouldn’t be difficult,” Fine said at the time, comments that were strongly condemned by Democratic Congressman Ro Khanna, who accused Fine of being “big-headed.” “He should be censured. This is about morality and decency, not politics,” Khanna stated.
However, Fine challenged the Democratic congressman: “Do you really want to have common cause with those who want to ban Americans from owning dogs? I’m eager to open this debate. Open it,” he clarified.
In response, Khanna argued that “taking one person’s comment and attributing it to everyone who shares their faith is the definition of intolerance. Perhaps Genesis should be reread, which says that all humans are made in the image and likeness of God,” he suggested, while Fine pointed out that in the same chapter, God created dogs. “They’re man’s best friend for a reason,” he concluded.
