Thousands of women march in Caracas to demand the release of Maduro and the country’s first lady
Venezuela’s interim president, Delcy Rodríguez, responded on Tuesday to threats made by US President Donald Trump, asserting that “God” is the one who decides her “destiny.”
Trump warned Rodríguez this past weekend that she would “pay a higher price” than President Nicolás Maduro, who was arrested early Saturday morning in a military raid in Caracas, if she did not “do the right thing.”
In response, and during an appearance to announce the launch of the Agro-Food General Staff, an effort to alleviate the food crisis generated by the US operation and the resulting economic uncertainty, Rodríguez downplayed Trump’s warnings.
“Personally, to those who threaten me, I say this: Only God decides my destiny,” the interim president asserted after stating, on a day when thousands of women supporters of Maduro took to the streets of Caracas, that Venezuelans are ready to demonstrate that “we have grown in strength, that we have grown spiritually to face the challenges, the aggressions, and the threats.”
Interior Minister Diosdado Cabello led the demonstration in the streets of the capital, demanding the release of Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, from the hands of “US imperialism,” which he claimed had “kidnapped” them.
“Imperialism knows that it has committed a terrible crime, that they have murdered civilians who were sleeping and had nothing to do with it, and a bomb exploded, and imperialism knows that today it is violating all international laws and its own laws,” Cabello stated.
The Interior Minister, one of the pillars of Chavismo, declared that Maduro is a “prisoner of war” and that “voices from around the world are rising up, but above all, voices in Venezuela are rising up demanding that they return Nicolás and Cilia to us.”
