US President Donald Trump announced this Wednesday the imposition of tariffs of “approximately” 100 percent on imported chips and semiconductors, a measure he hopes to pressure companies to move production of these products to North American territories.
“If you manufacture in the United States, there will be no surcharges,” Trump stated, opening the door to extending these concessions to companies that are in the process of relocating production or have made certain commitments, with the threat of “getting paid later” if these agreements are breached.
In this regard, he stated that US companies are “rapidly” moving their production, in an appearance in which Trump wanted to boast about his alliance with companies like Apple, which has pledged to invest $100 billion to boost domestic production.
The company’s CEO, Tim Cook, stated during the White House event that this new commitment raises investment in the United States to over $600 billion.
