The artificial intelligence revolution has crossed a threshold that deserves considerably more attention than the release of another smartphone or chatbot.
Until recently, most conversations surrounding AI focused on what the technology could do for us: write, code, translate, analyze documents, create images and automate business operations.
Now there is a much more troubling question:
What happens when that same intelligence learns to find vulnerabilities, write malicious code and conduct cyber operations at speeds impossible for human attackers?
More than 100 companies and organizations—including some of the world’s most influential technology firms—have issued an extraordinary warning that the answer may begin unfolding much sooner than many people realize.
The coalition is calling for a major acceleration in AI-powered cyber defense as increasingly capable artificial intelligence systems threaten to give attackers unprecedented speed and scale.
Among the participants are OpenAI, Google, Microsoft, Amazon Web Services, Anthropic, IBM, Cisco, CrowdStrike and other major organizations spanning technology, cybersecurity, infrastructure and financial services.
They are not warning about something that might happen a decade from now.
They are talking about a transformation already underway.
An Unusual Warning From the Technology Industry
The fact that competing technology companies are joining together around such a warning is significant.
AI systems are becoming increasingly capable of performing sophisticated computer tasks. The concern is that cyber operations that once required specialized expertise, teams of hackers and substantial amounts of time could increasingly be accelerated or automated with artificial intelligence.
The potential targets extend far beyond personal computers.
Hospitals. Banks. Water systems. Telecommunications networks. Government agencies. Businesses. Critical infrastructure.
The same AI capable of helping a programmer identify a software vulnerability can potentially help an attacker find one.
The same technology capable of writing legitimate software can assist in generating code designed to exploit weaknesses.

Imagine an employee receiving what appears to be an email from the company’s president requesting an urgent wire transfer.
The writing sounds correct.
The name is correct.
The company information is correct.
The instructions appear legitimate.
The attacker may even know who normally approves the transaction because much of that information can be gathered from websites and social media.
Artificial intelligence can combine those details into a highly personalized deception.
The old stereotype of a scam email filled with spelling mistakes and awkward language is rapidly becoming obsolete.
Its replacement can look remarkably professional.

Why Florida Should Pay Particular Attention
Florida has several characteristics that make this transformation especially important.
The state has a massive population, millions of small businesses, one of America’s largest populations of older adults and enormous tourism, healthcare, financial, transportation and government infrastructures.
Central Florida alone contains airports, hospitals, hotels, theme parks, schools, local governments, financial institutions and tens of thousands of small businesses increasingly dependent on cloud services and online communications.
A disruption affecting those systems would not remain confined to the technology department.
It could affect everyday life.
Cybersecurity specialists in Florida have already warned that artificial intelligence is increasingly becoming part of both offensive and defensive cyber operations.
Cyber Florida, based at the University of South Florida, has tracked threats involving AI-assisted phishing, credential theft, malicious software and attacks targeting cloud environments and software supply chains.
Florida therefore is not observing this technological transformation from a distance.
It is part of it.
Small Businesses Could Become the Perfect Target
Major corporations employ cybersecurity teams.
A five-person company in Kissimmee probably does not.
A real estate office may share information through email and text messages.
A construction company may regularly receive banking instructions from vendors.
A restaurant owner may manage payroll, invoices and banking from one computer.
A professional office may maintain sensitive client records.
For an attacker, penetrating the defenses of a multinational corporation may require months of preparation.
Convincing one employee at a small company to surrender a password could take minutes.
Artificial intelligence makes it possible to research companies, identify employees, understand business relationships and create personalized messages at enormous scale.
That makes cybersecurity no longer simply an issue for technology companies.
It becomes a basic business-management responsibility.
The New Rule: Verify Before You Trust
The emerging threat requires businesses and families to change some everyday habits.
Strong unique passwords and multifactor authentication should now be considered basic security rather than optional precautions.
Computers and smartphones should remain updated because security patches frequently correct vulnerabilities already known to attackers.
Unexpected requests involving money, passwords or banking information should be verified through another communication channel.
Families may even consider establishing a private verification word that can be used if someone receives an emergency call supposedly coming from a relative.
For businesses, one rule deserves particular emphasis:
A change in banking instructions should never be approved solely through an email.
Calling a previously known telephone number to verify a transaction can take two minutes.
Those two minutes could prevent the loss of tens or hundreds of thousands of dollars.
AI Could Also Become Our Strongest Defense
There is an important paradox in this story.
The technology making sophisticated cyberattacks possible may also become one of the most powerful cybersecurity tools ever created.
Artificial intelligence can examine enormous quantities of computer code.
It can identify unusual network activity.
It can search for vulnerabilities.
It can help cybersecurity teams analyze attacks.
And eventually it could allow smaller organizations to access defensive capabilities that previously required teams of highly trained specialists.
That is why the technology industry’s warning is not primarily a demand to stop developing artificial intelligence.
The companies are arguing that defensive AI must advance as rapidly as offensive capability.
That could become one of the most consequential technological races of the decade.
It will no longer simply be about which company builds the smartest AI model.
It will also be about who builds the technology capable of defending society against the misuse of those models.
The Technology Race Has Changed
For the past several years, the public conversation surrounding artificial intelligence has focused largely on employment, productivity and competition among technology giants.
Those questions remain important.
But another question is rapidly moving to the center of the debate:
Can we protect our digital infrastructure when machines can search for vulnerabilities at machine speed?
The answer could determine much more than which technology company wins the artificial intelligence race.
It could affect the security of banks, hospitals, businesses, government agencies and individual households.
Artificial intelligence was introduced to millions of people as an assistant.
The technology industry is now preparing for a world in which we must also defend ourselves when equally powerful AI is operating on the other side of the screen.
For Florida’s businesses, governments and families, that is not a distant technological prediction.
It is becoming a cybersecurity reality.
