US President Donald Trump has threatened to impose new and “substantial” tariffs and restrict chip exports on countries that do not eliminate digital taxes or regulations he considers harmful to American technology companies.
“I warn all countries with digital taxes, legislation, rules, or regulations that unless these discriminatory actions are eliminated, (…) I will impose substantial additional tariffs on that country’s exports to the United States and implement export restrictions on our highly protected technology and chips,” he stated on his Truth Social platform.
The White House resident stated that the digital tariffs and legislation “are designed to harm or discriminate against American technology,” without providing further details, and criticized countries that “outrageously give carte blanche to China’s largest technology companies.” “This must end, and it must end now,” he added.
Thus, he asserted that “the United States and American technology companies are no longer the world’s moneybox or doormat,” before threatening “consequences” if countries do not show “respect” for the “incredible” American companies.
In early August, the US president announced the imposition of tariffs of “approximately” 100% on imported chips and semiconductors, a measure he hopes to pressure companies to move production of these products to US territories.
