Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov has conveyed to Venezuelan Vice President Delcy RodrÃguez Moscow’s clear political support for Caracas in its efforts to “defend national sovereignty and guarantee institutional stability” in the face of “growing external pressure.”
The two leaders spoke by telephone at a time of particular tension over the deployment of US military ships off the Venezuelan coast, although the Russian Foreign Ministry did not specifically mention these movements in its statement.
Delcy RodrÃguez, however, did so, thanking the Russian government for its “unconditional” support “in the face of the escalating threats from the United States government” against Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro on the social network Telegram.
Lavrov and RodrÃguez reiterated both countries’ willingness to strengthen their bilateral alliance and strengthen ties on other international issues. The Venezuelan vice president has emphasized her support for “the efforts in the peace negotiations,” in an apparent reference to Ukraine.
