US President Donald Trump announced Wednesday that he will send letters to more than 150 countries notifying them of the imposition of tariffs on their exports, which could be as high as 10 or 15 percent.
“We’re going to send a payment notice to more than 150 countries, and that notice will state what the tariff rate will be. It will be the same for everyone, for that group,” he told reporters from the White House, adding that these countries “are not large and don’t do a lot of business.”
The US president later indicated during an interview with Real America’s Voice that this tariff “will probably be 10 or 15 percent; we haven’t decided yet.”
Trump has sent a series of letters in recent days informing other economies of the imposition of new tariffs on their products starting August 1, thus extending the initial deadline of July 9, pending compliance with Washington’s demands or the reaching of trade agreements. The letters, published on Truth Social, are presented as “agreements.”
Asked about the negotiations with the European Union, which faces a 30 percent increase on the tariffs already imposed by Washington on its products, the White House resident suggested that “we could reach an agreement with Europe,” while displaying apparent indifference. “You know, I just don’t care,” he asserted.
Despite this, the president stated that “the EU has been brutal, and now they’re being very nice. They want to reach an agreement, and it will be very different from the agreement we’ve had for years.”
