Trump Approves Plan to Boost Nuclear Energy That Reduces Licensing Requirements

US President Donald Trump signed several executive orders this Friday seeking to boost nuclear energy production in the country, accelerating the issuance of new licenses for the implementation of nuclear plants and reducing the requirements and necessary legislation.

“Today we are signing important executive orders that will make us a true powerhouse in this industry, which is a great industry,” the US president said during the signing of the executive orders in the Oval Office.

The measures included in the orders include “streamlining environmental reviews,” adopting “science-based radiation limits” when current models are deemed “flawed,” and strictly limiting requests for changes while a nuclear reactor is under construction.

In this sense, the Trump administration aims to establish “lasting US dominance in the global nuclear energy market” that can “free the United States from dependence on geopolitical rivals.”

Deregulation and a commitment to strategic autonomy guide the various orders, which also focus on research through the promotion of new nuclear reactors and the incorporation of advanced technologies into the country’s energy production.

They also advocate for a restructuring of the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NCR), the state agency responsible for overseeing nuclear activities, under the scrutiny of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), which will involve reducing its staff “to a minimum.”

Donald Trump has cited France and its nuclear energy production policy as an example. “France has done a good job at this for years,” the White House resident stated.
