Sheinbaum says Mexico is ready “for any scenario” in the face of Trump’s tariff threats

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum reiterated this Friday that they are prepared “for any scenario” and that they will act “with a cool head” after her counterpart in the White House, Donald Trump, insisted the day before that the 25 percent tariffs for Mexico and Canada will come into effect this Saturday.

“We are going to wait, as I have always said, with a cool head (…) We are prepared and we maintain this dialogue,” said the Mexican president in her usual morning press conference at the National Palace.

In this sense, she assured that the Government has “plan A, plan B, plan C” in the face of any maneuver by the US authorities. “It is very important that Mexico knows that we will always defend the dignity of our people, respect for our sovereignty and a dialogue as equals,” she stressed.

Sheinbaum explained that conversations with officials from the Trump Administration are ongoing and agreements are reached “every day”, whether on security or immigration issues. “We will always maintain dialogue, it is fundamental in the relationship” between the two countries, she said.

These conversations, as she said, have already led to agreements for the repatriation of Mexican citizens and, where appropriate, of other nationalities, but always “with respect” to sovereignty and Human Rights.

In the last few hours, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has also reacted to the tariff threats, promising to respond in a “decisive” and “forceful” but always “reasonable” manner to Trump’s reprisals against the United States’ trade deficit with Canada.

As for Mexico, it is its supposed leniency in matters of security and immigration at the border that has caused Trump’s discontent and his decision to impose these aggressive tariff policies on its exports.
