The White House maintains that the Colombian Government “has accepted all of Trump’s terms”
The Colombian Government has assured that it will facilitate the return of its nationals “who were to arrive” this Sunday to the country (…) on deportation flights”, after the new president of the United States, Donald Trump, announced the imposition of tariffs and sanctions against the Latin American country, for its decision to reject the entry of two planes with deported migrants.
The head of Foreign Affairs of the Latin American country, Luis Gilberto Murillo, has indicated that “the Government of Colombia, under the directive of the president, Gustavo Petro, has the presidential plane ready to facilitate the return of the compatriots who were to arrive today in the morning to the country on deportation flights.”
In a video posted on social networks, he indicated that the Colombian authorities will continue to receive deported Colombians, “guaranteeing them decent conditions as citizens subject to rights.”
He also stated that diplomatic channels are maintained with Washington, where he plans to travel “in the coming days” to hold “high-level meetings to follow up on the agreements” with representatives of the Trump Administration. “We have overcome the impasse with the United States Government,” he said, before adding that he would be accompanied by the Colombian ambassador in the country, Daniel García Peña.
Previously, the White House has assured that the Petro Government “has accepted all of Trump’s terms, including the unrestricted acceptance of all illegal foreigners from Colombia returned from the United States, even on American military aircraft, without limitations or delays.”
In a note sent to the media, he also indicated that “the fully drafted tariffs and sanctions will be kept confidential, and will not be signed, unless Colombia does not comply with this agreement.”
“Today’s events make it clear to the world that America is once again respected. Trump will continue to fiercely protect our nation’s sovereignty, and he expects all other nations of the world to fully cooperate in accepting the deportation of their citizens illegally present in the United States,” the statement said.
For its part, the US State Department has said that it “will continue to implement and prioritize the ‘America First’ agenda,” alluding to the slogan ‘Make America Great Again’.
“The United States will not back down when it comes to defending its national security interests,” the agency headed by Secretary of State Marco Rubio added on its X social network account.
These statements come after the US president announced on Sunday the imposition of tariffs of 25 percent immediately, which will rise to 50 percent within a week “on all goods arriving in the United States,” “visa sanctions against all party members, family members and supporters of the Colombian government,” as well as prohibiting the entry and revoking the visas of “Colombian government officials and all its allies and supporters.”
All of this in retaliation for the decision of his Colombian counterpart to deny the entry of two planes with immigrants deported from the United States, arguing that “a migrant is not a criminal and must be treated with the dignity that a human being deserves” and because they were military planes. “We will receive our compatriots on civilian planes, without treating them like criminals. Colombia is respected,” he said.
