The Government of the Bahamas has “firmly” rejected this Thursday the proposal of the president-elect of the United States, Donald Trump, to accept on its territory flights of migrants deported from other countries.
“The Office of the Prime Minister wishes to address recent reports about a proposal from the transition team of (Donald) Trump in the United States for the Bahamas to accept deportation flights of migrants from other countries. This matter was presented to the Government of the Bahamas, but was reviewed and firmly rejected by the Prime Minister,” said the Executive led by Philip Davis.
In a brief statement, the Government has indicated that “it simply does not have the resources to address this request” and that “(its) priorities remain focused on addressing the concerns of the Bahamian people.”
According to the authorities of the archipelago, there have been no further discussions with the Republican’s transition team “or with any other entity regarding this matter.”
Trump has promised to carry out mass deportations of undocumented migrants once he takes office in January. Around 11 million people live and work illegally in the United States. Trump’s idea of ​​expelling them from the country could affect some 20 million families, according to figures published by the news portal Axios.
