The two leaders highlight the “coordinated support” for Ukraine in the face of Russia’s “aggression”
The President of the United States, Joe Biden, has expressed this Friday that he sees the death of the leader of the Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas), Yahya Sinwar, as an “opportunity”, words that add to those of the German Chancellor, Olaf Scholz, who considers that his death “opens the door to a ceasefire” in the Gaza Strip, where more than 42,400 people have died due to the Israeli offensive.
Biden has described his death as “a moment of justice” during a meeting with Scholz in Berlin, the German capital.
Scholz, for his part, has affirmed that there is now a “tangible perspective for a ceasefire”, although he has recalled that Israel has the right to defend itself. “It is important for me to say this clearly. We are on the side of Israel,” he said.
He also indicated that Germany intends to “continue to support Israel militarily,” which includes “guaranteeing its defense capabilities” despite the country’s siege of the Gaza Strip.
SUPPORT FOR UKRAINE
The two leaders took the opportunity to address the “long relationship between the two countries, based on shared democratic values” and highlighted their “coordinated support” for Ukraine “to defend itself from Russian aggression,” as well as “efforts to confront anti-Semitism and other forms of hatred” in the Middle East and other areas of the world.
“President Biden has expressed his appreciation for Germany’s leadership in increasing the budget allocated to NATO’s collective defense and has highlighted its role as a mediator in achieving the release of wrongly detained Americans,” the White House said in a statement.
In this regard, Scholz has reaffirmed his commitment to NATO and has assured that it is “thanks to Biden’s leadership” that the plan of the Russian president, Vladimir Putin, “has failed”, according to the German news agency DPA. “Thanks to that, Ukraine has not fallen in a matter of days and, instead, has resisted Russian imperialism for more than two and a half years,” he added.
