The National Assembly of Venezuela has dismissed the director of the National Electoral Council (CNE) Juan Carlos Delpino, who denounced irregularities in the presidential elections held on July 28 in the Caribbean country, and has asked the Prosecutor’s Office to open an investigation against him for allegedly participating in “destabilization plans” against the Government.
The president of the Parliament, Jorge RodrÃguez, had previously requested and with “urgency” that the Chamber “correct the serious actions undertaken by the public official,” so the deputies have proceeded to vote in favor of his dismissal.
“The criminal and traitor has arrived today,” said RodrÃguez, who has accused Delpino of failing to fulfill his duties during the transmission and dissemination of the results of the elections, which according to Chavismo were easily won by the president, Nicolás Maduro, against an opposition that also claims to have won.
In this regard, he explained that the request submitted to the Prosecutor’s Office calls for an investigation to be opened for charges that include treason, criminal association and complicity with foreign powers, according to information from the Globovisión channel. He has also requested the imposition of sanctions against him.
Shortly after the elections, the rector denounced a series of irregularities that had led, as he explained, to a loss of confidence on the part of the voters in the viability of the electoral process. The Venezuelan opposition continues to insist that fraud occurred and claims the victory of Edmundo González.
At the beginning of October, Delpino himself met with González, who stated that the rector had detailed his experience of what happened on July 28 inside the facilities of the electoral body. “It is important to remember that he was the only one absent when the fraudulent results were announced on the night of the presidential election, which forced him to leave the country,” said the opposition leader at the time.
