The Chinese authorities have criticized this Wednesday the new multi-million dollar aid package for Taiwan approved this week by the United States Congress and have warned that in geopolitical terms it is like “shooting themselves in the foot” for Washington.
The spokesperson for the Chinese Foreign Ministry, Wang Wenbin, has thus asserted that this aid package valued at 90 billion euros – and which includes a large allocation for Ukraine – will not bring security to Taiwan nor “save its destiny in favor of independence” of the territory, which China considers another region under its sovereignty.
“This will only lead to an increase in tensions and will favor the risk of conflict and confrontation in the Taiwan Strait. It is like shooting yourself in the foot,” he said at a press conference, according to the Chinese newspaper ‘The Paper’. In this sense, he has urged the United States authorities to adhere to the “one China principle” by which the Asian giant is governed.
Wang has also asked that the US Government respect the content of the three joint Sino-US communiqués agreed upon in the past and take the necessary measures to abandon its support for Taiwanese independence, a position that goes through ” stop delivering weapons to Taiwan,” he stressed.
“China will closely follow relevant developments on this matter and take necessary measures effectively and resolutely to safeguard its sovereignty, security and territorial integrity,” he said.
For her part, the spokesperson for the Taiwan Affairs Office of the State Council of China, Zhu Fenglian, has expressed her hope that “Taiwanese will go to mainland China to find their roots and learn there the lessons they have not learned.” could learn in Taiwan.
Likewise, she has rejected the US bill and has lamented that it sends “a wrong signal to separatist forces advocating for Taiwan’s independence”, something to which she “firmly opposes”. For this reason, she has called for “fulfilling promises not to support Taiwan’s independence and to stop delivering weapons” to the island.
Ties between Taiwan and mainland China were severed in 1949, after forces of the nationalist Kuomintang party suffered defeat in the civil war against the Communist Party and moved to the archipelago. However, relations were later reestablished on a commercial and informal level in the late 1980s. Since then, China’s official policy has been the peaceful reunification of the territory under the principle of “one country, two systems.”
