The mayor of Miami, Francis Suarez, withdrew his candidacy for the 2024 presidential elections in the United States on Tuesday, thus becoming the first Republican candidate to abandon his aspiration to win the Republican primaries to reach the White House.
“Although I have decided to suspend my campaign for president, my commitment to make this a better nation for all Americans remains,” Suárez said in a statement on the X social network, formerly known as Twitter.
Suárez, of Cuban origin, has announced his withdrawal after not being able to attend a presidential debate in Milwaukee for not meeting the requirements established by the Republican National Committee on the number of donors, NBC News has reported.
Suárez was re-elected to the position in Miami, although he submitted his candidacy in June as a whole new face against his rivals, former US President Donald Trump; Florida Governor Ron DeSantis; former US Vice President Mike Pence or former South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley.
