The vice president of the United States, Kamala Harris, highlighted this Sunday the commitment of the US Democratic Party to the right to abortion, in a speech delivered in Tallahassee, Florida, on the 50th anniversary of the Roe v. Wade case.
Harris has criticized legislation in Florida, where last year the Republican majority passed a law banning abortions after 15 weeks of gestation.
“The so-called leaders of the state House of Representatives, here in Tallahassee, passed a sweeping ban on abortion with no exceptions, not even for survivors of crimes like rape, child abuse or human trafficking,” she has regretted her.
“Here in Florida, health professionals face prison terms of up to five years for simply doing their job. And now (state authorities) have even threatened pharmacists with criminal charges if they dispense drugs (for abort),” Harris criticized.
In this sense, the vice president has indicated that “Florida is not alone” because there are more than twenty states that limit access to prescription drugs for abortions.
“So today we are fighting back,” she announced, explaining that US President Joe Biden has announced measures to facilitate protection for abortion seekers.
Harris made this speech on the 50th anniversary of Roe v. Wade, the 1973 Supreme Court ruling that protected the legal right to abortion until the high court’s 6-3 conservative majority struck it down last year.
In the months since the Court struck down Roe, the battle for abortion rights has moved to state legislatures. Republican-led states have been quick to enact new restrictions on the procedure.
“We will not back down. We know this fight will not be won until we guarantee this right to all Americans,” she said.
