The Senate of the Republic in its Extraordinary Session approved in a single reading the Draft Resolution that pays tribute to the sisters Patria, Minerva and María Teresa Mirabal, for their fight in favor of democracy and the freedom of the Dominican people.
The approved project recalls that the Mirabal sisters, as a consequence of their fight for democracy, were assassinated on November 25, 1960, by order of the dictator Rafael Leónidas Trujillo, turning them into martyrs of the Dominican people, whose memory motivates them to continue their struggles. collective protests against repression and violence.
The legislative initiative was presented by the senator of the Mirabal Sisters province, Bautista Antonio Rojas Gómez, who requested the Plenary to transfer the headquarters to hold the Extraordinary Session, in order to honor the memory of the Mirabal Sisters.
In the legislative work, which was headed by the vice president of the Senate, Santiago Zorrilla, the senators sanctioned in first reading the Bill that declares the Cultural Festival of the Hermanas Mirabal province, Intangible Cultural Heritage of the Dominican Nation, initiative of the senator Bautista Antonio Rojas Gomez.
The purpose of the project is to promote the cultural protection of said festival and establish the conditions for its protection, development, promotion and sustainability over time.
The senators met for an extraordinary session at the Mirabal Sisters House Museum, in this province, where they also approved in a single reading the Draft Resolution that recognizes Dr. Antonio Manuel Florencio Estrella for his contributions to the Mirabal Sisters province, freedom , democracy and the country. The initiative was presented by Senator Bautista Antonio Rojas Gómez.
Senator Rojas Gómez thanked the senators for the supportive reception they gave to the initiative that requested the holding of an Extraordinary Session at the Mirabal Sisters House-Museum, located in the municipality of Salcedo.
The legislator assured that the Dominican Republic has taken steps forward in the fight to eliminate violence against women, but work still needs to be done to strengthen it. “As the first power of the State, the Upper House assumes the commitment of the task of creating awareness in the country and the world,” he said.
The senator from Bahoruco, Melania Salvador, explained that the Permanent Commission on Family and Gender Equality of the Senate of the Republic, which she currently chairs, has worked on initiatives on the elimination that are focused on condemning and eradicating violence against women.” We are proud to continue in this task”, said the senator.
The senator of the Elías Piña province, Aris Yván Lorenzo, said that it is one of the greatest honors to be present at the session held at the Mirabal Sisters House-Museum and explained that now more than ever, the country must honor their memories, promoting a culture of peace.
The Senator of Montecristi, Ramón Pimentel, urged women to become aware and denounce the abuses that are committed against them inside and outside the home.
The senator of the National District, Faride Raful, valued the celebration of the Extraordinary Session of the Senate, considering that it is worth remembering Patria, Minerva and María Teresa Miraval every November 25, “because all is not lost, let’s make a commitment shared with democracy, with the firm purpose of defending and preserving it, regardless of the consequences”, he emphasized.
The senator of Monte Plata, Lenin Valdez, pointed out that thanks to the fight waged by the Mirabal sisters, currently the Government has valued women, giving them their spaces, by placing them in different State positions.
He highlighted that currently the 32 governorates are headed by women.
Senator de la Vega, Ramón Rogelio Genao Durán, called for national unity to defend national sovereignty against threats from international organizations. He explained that there is a need to approve the Dominican Penal Code to eradicate gender violence.
The senator from San Cristóbal, Franklin Rodríguez, said he was proud to have 4 fellow senators and expressed gratitude to the Mirabal sisters, considering that for their courage, “today we Dominicans enjoy freedom of movement, assembly, and expression.”
The senator of Puerto Plata, Ginnette Bournigal de Jiménez, recalled the memory of the national heroines, indicating that in the country there are women and men of value, who must continue to uphold the values and strength of the so-called Mirabal Sister Butterflies.
