The image of the United States abroad has improved substantially since the arrival of Biden

The arrival of Democrat Joe Biden to the White House has substantially improved the image of the United States abroad, according to a survey that scores the opinions of people from 16 countries, including Spain, and that shows a greater confidence towards the current one. administration.

If with Donald Trump as president of the United States only 34 percent of those interviewed had a favorable opinion of the North American country, with Biden the figure shoots up to 62 percent, according to the Pew Research Center. In Spain, the data has gone from 40 to 62 percent, just the average of the countries analyzed.

It also improves the individual assessment of the president himself on matters such as foreign policy, since 75 percent of those surveyed trust Biden’s diplomacy, compared to 17 percent obtained by Trump before leaving power. The data are similar in Spain, with 73 percent support for the current president and 16 percent for his predecessor.

Among the gestures most valued by the international community is the reincorporation of the United States into the World Health Organization (WHO) -89 percent-, the return to the Paris Agreements on climate change -85 percent- and the plan to accept more refugees in the United States –76 percent -, among other aspects analyzed.

However, the American model of democracy is still not a reference for the rest of the world, since only 17 percent believe that it is worthy of imitation and 57 percent believe that, although it may be a good example, it has not. been over the past few years.

60 percent believe that the North American system does not work – in Spain the figure falls to 47 percent – according to the Pew Research Center survey, made from 16,254 interviews and published precisely coinciding with the first trip abroad of Biden, who will attend the G7 leaders’ summit in the UK and then travel to Brussels.

The current tenant of the White House is not, in any case, the most valued international leader, since the support to the Chancellor of Germany, Angela Merkel, amounts to 77 percent, ahead of that obtained by Biden. Behind the French president, Emmanuel Macron, with 63 percent, and at the bottom of the list the leaders of Russia, Vladimir Putin, and China, Xi Jinping, who obtain 23 and 20 percent, respectively. .
