Afghanistan announces the death of more than 60 Taliban in various security operations

The official delegation travels to Moscow for the conference this Thursday

The Government of Afghanistan announced on Wednesday the death of more than 60 Taliban in the framework of a series of operations carried out by the security forces, amid the upsurge in violence in the country despite the peace talks that began. in September in Qatar.

The Afghan Ministry of Defense has indicated through its account on the social network Twitter that 55 alleged insurgents have died in operations in the province of Kandahar (south), while another eight died in another in the province of Balkh (north).

On the other hand, an official delegation headed by the president of the High Council for National Reconciliation, Abdullah Abdullah, started this Wednesday its trip to the Russian capital, Moscow, to participate in a conference on the Afghan peace process.

Abdullah’s office has highlighted the “key role of the neighbors of Afghanistan and Russia in establishing a lasting peace in the country” and stressed that the conference will “boost” talks with the Taliban in Doha, which have not been successful. barely any progress so far.

He has also indicated that the meeting in Moscow will also benefit the conference to be held in April in Turkey to address the peace process, as reported by the Afghan television channel Tolo TV. The delegation is made up of twelve members.

The Taliban and the US special representative for Afghanistan, Zalmay Khalilzad, confirmed on Monday that they will participate in the summit that Russia is organizing, which will take place this Thursday, amid international efforts to revitalize the process in Doha.

The Russian government confirmed last week that all those invited to the March 18 summit have confirmed their participation, including the Afghan Executive and the Taliban, who, however, had not commented on the matter.

For his part, Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu announced on March 12 that he will host a new conference on the peace process in April, adding that the United Nations and countries such as the United States and Russia will participate.
