The Government of Russia has officially requested entry as an observer country in the Movement of Non-Aligned Countries (NAM), as reported on Thursday by the Russian Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, Sergei Vershinin.
“Russia requested to join this movement as an observer country,” Vershinin said in his speech in a telematic appearance in the Russian Senate, according to the Russian news agency Sputnik. The Russian deputy minister explained that the procedure to access this group will be extended in time.
“At present the NAM is an amorphous organism but the last great events, the forums of the last days that took place in Baku (Azerbaijan), showed the strong similarity of the positions of the countries of the organization,” he explained.
Established in 1961, the Non-Aligned Movement is made up of 120 countries in Africa, Asia, Latin America, the Caribbean and Europe, and also has 17 countries and ten international organizations that are members with observer status.
