Leonardo DiCaprio is determined to protect Mexican ecosystems. The actor and director, one of Hollywood’s biggest environmental activists, has teamed up with Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto and tycoon Carlos Slim for the noble purpose of defending endangered species from the Gulf of California at Sea Of Cortes.
This spectacular enclave, which Jacques Cousteau called “the aquarium of the world” houses threatened species such as the vaquita, a cetacean endemic in grave danger, the smallest in the world, of which only 30 remain. To prevent the disappearance of this animal, punished by illegal fishing, Leo DiCaprio has called for a permanent ban on fishing. Its foundation and that of Carlos Slim will help locate abandoned nets at sea to remove them and develop new forms of sustainable fishing.
