US Senator Elizabeth Warren questioned her partner Bernie Sanders immediately after Tuesday’s televised debate to reproach him for calling her a “liar,” after they both differed during peak hours on the content of a meeting held in 2018.
Warren and Sanders arrived at the debate with the swords raised, after the senator assured that her rival in the Democratic Party primaries told her in a private meeting that she saw no options for a woman to reach the White House in the elections of 2020.
Warren, also a senator, denied the version initially in a statement and on Tuesday, during the debate, he again unchecked any statement in that regard, warning that this type of internal debate only favors the electoral prospects of the current president, Donald Trump.
After the debate, organized by CNN, the cameras captured how Warren approached Sanders and refused to shake his hand. The American network has spread the content of the conversation, which begins with a clear recrimination by the senator: “I think you called me a liar on television.”
Sanders answers confused, so Warren repeats the question. “You know, we’re not going to do it right now. If you want to have that discussion, we’ll have it,” says the senator, referring to an upcoming conversation that Warren would be willing to hold “at any time.”
The two candidates, members of the progressive wing of the Democratic Party had maintained a non-aggression pact during the last months, but have ended up leading one of the main controversies that this process of primaries has left. Both are among the favorites of this race, which will start on February 3 with the Iowa caucus.
