Christmas postcard from Mars of the ESA Exomars TGO orbiter

The edge of this ice-rich crater captures the morning sunlight in the high northern latitudes of Mars, photographed by the Exomars TGO orbiter (Trace Gas Orbiter) of ESA on October 26.

This image presents a seven-kilometer-wide bowl-shaped crater photographed first thing in the morning. The sunlight that falls on the ice deposits on the walls facing north of the crater makes the ice look extremely bright. Ice fills much of the crater floor and covers part of the surrounding terrain.

While the image was taken during the summer months, some shaded regions receive fewer hours of sunlight on average throughout the year, so they trap permanent deposits of water ice, reports ESA.
