San Juan, .- The Senate of Puerto Rico voted today against the Bill of the House of Representatives 1057 that sought to eliminate the Association of Employees of the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico (AEELA).
Senators from the ruling New Progressive Party (PNP) and the opposition voted against the bill authored by legislator Lourdes Ramos.
The entity would have been replaced by a Governing Board appointed by the governor and the legislative presidents.
The president of the Senate, Thomas Rivera Schatz, said about the initiative that “nobody speaks for the Senate, there are many people who live by speculation, that is a project of the House of Representatives – it is not a project of the Senate.”
The House Bill 1057 was approved by the House of Representatives on June 24, 2017 with the backing of 31 votes in favor and 19 against, including those of the majority representatives José Torres Zamora and Gabriel RodrÃguez.
The AEELA is a non-profit institution created in 1912 that aims to encourage savings and offer benefits to public employees of the Government of Puerto Rico.
It is an instrument that helps officials not to pay the high interest of commercial banks and offers personal and mortgage loans, among other financial services. (EFEUSA)
