Miami, .- Thompson Cigar Company, the oldest mail-order cigar company in the United States, with 104 years of existence, will close this year its business in Tampa (Florida) by decision of its new owner, Scandinavian Tobacco Group.
Tampa media echoed on Wednesday the announcement of the closure of the distribution center and the discount store that Thompson, founded in 1915 in Key West, has since 1960 in Ybor City, on the outskirts of the so-called “city of the cigar.”
The company, which has 112 employees in Tampa and sells by catalog, online and in-store, was sold in 2018 to the Scandinavian Tobacco Group (STG) for $ 62 million.
His new owner decided to close the business in the Floridian city and move the operations to Pennsylvania, the workers told local TV channel 10.
The majority of workers will cease next June and a small group will stay for final closure at the end of the year.
Thompson Cigar offers cigars from more than 50 brands, including Cohiba, Romeo and Juliet, Davidoff, Montecristo, H. Upmann and the Dominican Flower, as well as accessories to smoke and keep them, and also makes electronic auctions of cigarettes.
When in April 2018, STG announced the closing of the operation to acquire the company until then owned by the Franzblau family it was reported that Thompson had an annual income of about 100 million dollars.
