Death toll in Thailand from Cambodian attacks rises to 14

The Armed Forces have accused the Cambodian government of war crimes for its use of “long-range weapons against civilians.”

Thailand/Cambodia.- The Thai government reported this Friday that the death toll in the country due to the clashes with Cambodia that erupted on the shared border has risen to 14 dead, thirteen of them civilians, and more than fifty wounded, including both military personnel and civilians.

In a brief statement on Facebook, the government spokesperson specified the exact figures, detailing a total of 32 civilians and 14 military personnel wounded, with seven of the civilians and six military personnel in serious condition.

The country’s Ministry of the Interior also stated that more than 100,000 people from the four border provinces have been relocated to nearly 300 temporary shelters, according to the Thai newspaper ‘Bangkok Post’.

For its part, the Thai Armed Forces “strongly” condemned this Friday the “continued use of long-range weapons by Cambodian forces against civilian areas,” attacks for which they held the Cambodian government responsible and which constitute “a war crime.”

“The Royal Thai Armed Forces strongly condemn the continued use of long-range weapons by the Cambodian army to attack civilian areas,” they stated on their Facebook account. “These barbaric acts have unjustifiably claimed the lives and injured numerous innocent civilians,” they added.

The Thai Army also held the Cambodian government responsible for these actions, which “not only constitute a serious violation of international humanitarian law, but also demonstrate a total disregard for human life,” the statement stated.

“Deliberately targeting civilians is a war crime,” reads the statement, in which the Thai Armed Forces “call on international organizations and the global community to conduct an independent and transparent investigation to ensure that the perpetrators receive appropriate punishment.”
