US President Donald Trump told the leaders of Liberia, Senegal, Mauritania, Guinea-Bissau, and Gabon this Wednesday that “Africa has great economic potential” during a summit in Washington.
“We are working tirelessly to forge new economic opportunities that involve both the United States and many African nations,” he emphasized during a working lunch with representatives of the wealthiest African nations.
The Republican magnate described the countries as “vibrant places with very valuable lands, magnificent minerals, large oil fields, and wonderful people.” “We encourage the countries here present to make greater investments in defense by purchasing our equipment,” he added.
However, representatives from South Africa, Nigeria, Egypt, and Ethiopia—close to the BRICS—were absent. Trump has already threatened to impose additional tariffs on those who align themselves with the “anti-American” policies that he believes this group of major emerging economies is pursuing.
