The president of the country accuses the international community of showing “disinterest” in the face of the tragedy suffered by Haitians
The president of the Dominican Republic, Luis Abinader, has declared Haitian criminal gangs terrorist organizations, a measure with which he seeks to address the serious situation that the country is suffering in terms of security, a crisis that “continues to deteriorate.”
In a decree published this Thursday, the president has ordered the activation of the National Anti-Terrorist Council and the National Anti-Terrorist Directorate to address this issue, while regretting that Haitian criminal gangs continue to take control of the territory of Port-au-Prince, the capital of the country, and part of the south of the country.
“They are committing barbaric acts and, last year alone, more than 5,000 people were killed,” he said in a statement before accusing the international community of showing “disinterest” in the “tragedy” suffered by the Haitian population.
The text details that the Delmas 6, 5 Segond, Kraze Barye, 400 Mawozo, Grand Ravine, Taliban/Canaan, Baz Gran Grif / Gang Savien, Kokorat San Ras, Haut Belair/Argentins and Belekou gangs, among others, have come to be considered terrorist organizations.
This means the activation of additional security measures within the framework of the Dominican Anti-Terrorist Law and involves the “pursuit, arrest and trial” of all those who appear as members of these gangs and decide to enter the Dominican Republic. “The security forces are warned to act with all severity in these cases,” he explained.
“The State Intelligence and Security agencies are instructed to take appropriate measures to prevent incursions by the aforementioned groups into the national territory, or against Dominican interests abroad,” establishes article 3 of the decree.
Thus, Abinader has stressed that under his Government “there will be no tolerance or consideration for those who threaten the security and peace of the Dominican people.” That is why he has defended a “proactive foreign policy, with a clear vision of national interests and aligned with the values of democracy, freedom, respect for Human Rights and cooperation between peoples.”
