French President Emmanuel Macron has invited European leaders to hold a special meeting on Monday in Paris on Ukraine following US President Donald Trump’s announced plans to end the war following talks with Russia.
European leaders have been trying to convince Trump not to rush peace talks with Russia. Scholz, according to his party, is scheduled to attend, and British Prime Minister Keir Starmer is also expected to attend, Bloomberg reported.
Polish Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski also confirmed the attendance of Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk in a post on X, although he later deleted it.
An official close to Macron said on Saturday that talks were underway on a possible informal meeting of European leaders, without offering further details.
Speaking on the second day of the Munich Security Conference, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky advocated the creation of a “European Army” as the next step in defending his country against Russian invasion and protecting its countries from external threats amid doubts about the current support of the United States.
He also reaffirmed his distance from the US and no longer ruled out Trump refusing to help Europe in the event of a threat.
In recent hours, US media have revealed the details of the negotiations between the US and Ukraine in which Trump would have conditioned aid to kyiv in exchange for possession of 50 percent of the country’s rare earth minerals, an offer that Zelensky has rejected in recent hours, according to sources from the ‘Financial Times’.
Macron on Friday conveyed to his Ukrainian counterpart his “intention to coordinate measures for a just end to the war” started by Russia and called on the United States authorities to try to “convince” Russian President Vladimir Putin to end the aggression when the conflict is about to reach three years.
