The President of the United States, Donald Trump, confirmed this Friday from Washington that his administration will maintain diplomatic ties with North Korea and has described his relationship with the North Korean leader, Kim Jong Un, as good.
“We will maintain relations with North Korea and with Kim Jong Un. I get along very well with him. I think I stopped the war. If I had not won those elections in particular we would have ended up in a very bad situation,” he stressed in a press conference with the Japanese Prime Minister, Shigeru Ishiba.
In this sense, the Republican magnate has highlighted that it is a “very big asset” for everyone to get along with the North Korean leader. “Japan likes the idea because they do not have a good relationship with him,” said Trump.
The White House tenant already indicated last January in an interview with Fox News that he plans to “get in touch” with Kim, without giving further details on the matter and without Pyongyang having yet commented on this possibility.
Trump, who met with the North Korean leader on three occasions during his first term, has not yet finished detailing what his strategy on Korea will be for this new stage, which is preceded by a series of missile launches by the Pyongyang authorities, in the context of a rise in tensions on the peninsula.
The tycoon held several summits with Kim during his first term, meetings that began in 2018 in Singapore, which was the first time that the leaders of both countries held a meeting since the Korean War (1950-1953), although they did not bear fruit or ultimately lead to a peace agreement.
