Death toll rises to ten in adult school shooting in Sweden

Police say “everything points to the perpetrator acting alone and without ideological motive”

The death toll from the shooting carried out on Tuesday by a man at an adult school in the Swedish city of Orebro (centre) has risen to ten, according to the authorities, who have stressed that for now the motives for the incident are unknown.

The local police chief, Roberto Eid Forest, has indicated that so far there are eleven confirmed dead, including “the person that the police suspect was the suspect”, and has added that the number of injured “is not clear”, according to a statement.

“It is an incredibly tragic event that has affected above all the victims and their families, but also all of Sweden,” he said, before adding that “everything points to the perpetrator acting alone and without ideological motive.”

Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristerrson appeared before the media after the incident, once the preliminary death toll was known, to offer his condolences for what is already “the worst mass shooting in the country’s history.”

“It is difficult to understand the magnitude of what has happened today (…) Today we have seen brutal and deadly violence against completely innocent people,” lamented the Swedish leader, who just a few days ago acknowledged that the country was going through a “wave of violence” for which the government had no answers.

The centre where the attack took place, called Campus Risbergska, offers classes for adults over 20 years of age and Swedish classes for immigrants and vocational training courses, according to the Orebro City Hall on its website.

The mayor of Orebro, Peter Larsson, has conveyed his condolences to the victims’ families and stressed that the incident “affects people and society.” “Our job now is to care for those who go to that school, those who work there and other residents of Orebro who are worried and sad,” she said.

“It’s a terrible event and now we have to help each other to move forward,” said Larsson, who also ordered that flags be flown at half-mast from Wednesday in memory of the victims of the shooting. She also announced that there will be a book of condolences at the town hall so that people can leave their messages.
