The President of the United States, Donald Trump, has threatened this Thursday the countries of the BRICS – a multilateral organization that groups various emerging economies and that has been established as an alternative international space to the G7 – with the imposition of 100% tariffs if they try to replace the US dollar.
“We are going to demand a commitment from these apparently hostile countries that they will not create a new currency or support any other to replace the powerful US dollar or, otherwise, they will face 100% tariffs and should expect to say goodbye to sales to the wonderful American economy,” he declared through his profile on the social network Truth Social.
Trump has assured that “the idea that the BRICS are trying to get away” from the dollar, while they sit “with their arms crossed” and watch, “is over.” “Let them find another stupid country. There is no chance that the BRICS will replace the US dollar in international trade, or anywhere else, and any country that tries should say hello to tariffs, and goodbye to the US!” he added.
The BRICS stands for its founding countries: Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa, although it is currently made up of eleven full members, including Saudi Arabia, Egypt, the United Arab Emirates, Ethiopia, Iran and Indonesia. It also has nine partner countries: Belarus, Bolivia, Cuba, Kazakhstan, Malaysia, Nigeria, Thailand, Uganda and Uzbekistan.
