South Korean prosecutors have announced the indictment of the country’s suspended president, Yoon Suk Yeol, as part of the investigation into the failed declaration of martial law promulgated on December 3 by the president, now stripped of his functions, in a decision that has unleashed a historic political storm in the country.
According to the indictment collected by the official South Korean news agency, Yonhap, Yoon faces an accusation of conspiring with the then Minister of Defense, Kim Yong Hyun, to incite an insurrection through the declaration of martial law and the deployment of military forces in the National Assembly, the South Korean Parliament, to prevent the deputies from overturning the decree, as ended up happening a few hours later.
With this charge, the president has now become the first president of the country to be charged with insurrection while under arrest and suspension from office.
The president, who is still considered as such until the country’s Constitutional Court decides otherwise, was arrested on January 19 after repeatedly refusing to answer to the court and the arrest warrant was set to expire in a matter of hours.
