Venezuelan opposition leader Edmundo González, who proclaimed himself president-elect after last summer’s elections, has announced that he will attend the inauguration of the president-elect of the United States, Donald Trump, in Washington next Monday.
This was confirmed by his campaign team in a statement published on social media, where he specified that it was the US government itself that invited “the legitimate president of Venezuela” to Trump’s inauguration.
“González has confirmed his attendance and will travel to Washington this weekend, where he also hopes to meet with other members of the new administration,” added Comando Con Venezuela in the aforementioned statement.
González has assured that he will take advantage of “all the spaces to defend the will of the Venezuelans” and has celebrated that “every day there are more international allies that join this fight,” including the United States, “a great ally of the cause.”
Venezuela held presidential elections at the end of July, after which the ruling party gave the victory to President Nicolás Maduro by a narrow margin of votes, although the opposition denounced fraud in the counting of votes and claimed the victory of González.
Thus, both Maduro and González defended their intention to take office as legitimate president of Venezuela. Finally, Maduro was sworn in again as president in the National Assembly, while the opposition has not even been able to return to the country.
