The Ukrainian government has reacted without any interest to the announcement made this Friday by the president-elect of the United States, Donald Trump, about a possible meeting with his Russian counterpart, Vladimir Putin, and has assured instead that it will dedicate its efforts to finalizing “high-level” contacts with the new American administration as soon as the American magnate returns to the White House on January 20.
It should be remembered that, since his victory in the presidential elections in the United States on November 6, 2024, Trump has openly expressed his desire to resume dialogue with the Russian president, with whom he met at several summits before the outbreak of the war in Ukraine. In fact, the Russian president had already welcomed Trump’s desire to “end the crisis” two days after the Republican’s victory and congratulated the president-elect on his victory at the polls.
“Donald Trump has already spoken before about his plans for such a meeting with Putin, so we see nothing new in this,” explained the spokesman for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine, Georgi Tikhi, at a press conference.
In his appearance, reported by the Ukrainian agency Ukrinform, the spokesman limited himself to recalling that kyiv fully agrees with Trump in his intentions to end the war in Ukraine. “We want to end the war in a fair way for Ukraine, and we see that Trump is also determined to end the war,” explained the spokesman.
“Therefore, the most important thing we are looking forward to now is the meeting between President Trump and Zelensky, because for us the most important thing is to work together with the United States for the sake of peace,” the spokesman said, adding that kyiv was already preparing “high-level contacts immediately after Trump’s inauguration.”
