Russian President Vladimir Putin on Tuesday highlighted in his New Year’s speech the achievements that Russia has made during its 25 years in power, assuring that this period has been “full of many large-scale events”, including several “of historical importance”.
In a message in which he did not explicitly name the Russian invasion of Ukraine, the Russian president has underlined the country’s achievements in the first quarter of the 21st century and has highlighted unity and strength as keys to overcoming the challenges faced during his mandate. “We set great goals and we achieved them, we overcame challenges more than once because we were together,” he said.
Putin has acknowledged in his speech, reported by the Russian agency TASS, that there is still “much to do”, but he has valued the progress achieved as the “common heritage and a reliable basis for further development”. He also pointed out that Russia has proven to be an “independent, free and strong” country, capable of responding to the most difficult challenges.
He also dedicated special words to the Russian soldiers, whom he described as “true heroes” for their work in defending the country and for guaranteeing “lasting peace and security” for the people. In their honour and coinciding with the 80th anniversary of the end of the Second World War, the Russian president has announced that 2025 will be declared the “Year of the Defender of the Fatherland”, paying tribute to past generations who fought for Russia’s sovereignty.
In his message, Putin has appealed to feelings of patriotism and traditional values that, according to him, inspire Russians to contribute to the development and protection of the country. “Sincere feelings for the Fatherland fill our lives with great meaning,” he added, stressing that these values have become a “matter of honour” for current generations.
Finally, he shared a message of hope and good wishes for the new year, stressing the importance of family and national unity. “When we are together, everything will come true,” Putin concluded, before wishing well-being and prosperity to all Russian homes: “Happy New Year, dear friends! Happy New Year 2025!”
