World leaders mourn Carter’s death, highlighting his commitment to peace and human rights

French President Emmanuel Macron, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, and other world leaders have expressed their condolences for the death of former US President Jimmy Carter on Sunday.

In a message on his social network X account, Macron has sent his “most sincere thoughts” to the family of the former US president, highlighting that he was “a firm defender of the rights of the most vulnerable and has fought tirelessly for peace.”

Starmer, for his part, has regretted Carter’s death, appealing to his “decades of selfless public service” and his “dedication to peace.”

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has also expressed his condolences, taking the opportunity to thank him for “his unwavering support for Ukraine in the face of Russia’s unprovoked aggression.”

“He was a leader who served during a time when Ukraine was not yet independent, but his heart was firmly with us in our ongoing fight for freedom,” he added.

From Hungary, Prime Minister Viktor Orbán has sent his “deepest condolences” to Carter’s family, whose memory, he said, “will always be very dear in Hungary.”

“By returning the Holy Crown to the Hungarian people in the late 1970s, he gave freedom-loving Hungarians hope in a desperate time,” he said on his social network account X.

On the other hand, the President of the European Parliament, Roberta Metsola, said that “Europe is in mourning with the people of the United States” at the death of the political leader, whose “decisive role in resolving conflicts that changed the course of history” she stressed.

UN Secretary-General António Guterres said he was “deeply saddened” by Carter’s death, highlighting his “significant” contribution to international peace and security, before and after his presidency, and praising his drive “towards the work of the United Nations.”

“President Carter will be remembered for his solidarity with the most vulnerable, his enduring grace, and his unwavering faith in the common good and our common humanity. His legacy as a peacemaker, human rights defender, and humanitarian will endure,” he said.
