Minister David Collado receives the 11 millionth visitor in a colorful event in Punta Cana.
Punta Cana.- The Dominican Republic surpassed the goal of 11 million visitors this Sunday, establishing another new record, consolidating itself as the leader of the sector in the region.
The Minister of Tourism, David Collado, received this Sunday the 11 millionth visitor, in a colorful event that took place at the Punta Cana international airport.
It is Bruce Pirt, who arrived in the country with his wife and two daughters, on an Air Transat flight from Canada.
Pirt did not hide his surprise and defined the Dominican Republic as a wonderful country, where he celebrated his wedding 20 years ago.
Bruce came to the country to celebrate his wedding anniversary with his wife Kathryn and his daughters Melissa and Anna.
Minister Collado said that, by surpassing this new goal of 11 million visitors, the Dominican Republic has consolidated itself as a leader in tourism in the region.
“Today is a day to celebrate in a big way, since we surpassed the barrier of 11 million visitors in one year. Another historic record for Dominican tourism,” said Collado.
The official affirmed that he not only celebrates, together with the private sector, the arrival of the tourist that represents the 11 million visitors, but also what that represents for the Dominican economy.
“What does that mean for the economy of our country? It means 949 thousand jobs in the year 2024 directly and indirectly, it means 26 billion dollars of the Gross Domestic Product, that is, tourism represented almost 20% of the GDP,” he indicated.
That also means, said Collado, 130 billion pesos in tax payments to the treasury.
He recalled that last year the country reached the goal of 10 million visitors, a long-standing aspiration of the sector, in a scenario similar to that of this Sunday.
